Union Drilling is one of the largest land drilling contractors in the United States. The company specializes in drilling in low permeability unconventional formations including coalbed methane, tight sands and shales. As a result of this focus, most of its 71 marketed rigs are equipped for underbalanced drilling to facilitate more rapid penetration through hard rock. Many of the company's rigs are configured for horizontal drilling, which increases exposure of the wellbore to gas-bearing formations and provides better drainage. The company also has a significant number of carrier and trailer mounted rigs to access drilling locations in challenging terrain. Union's rigs are located in some of the most active areas for unconventional drilling, including the Appalachian Basin, the Arkoma Basin, and the Fort Worth Basin.
